It is recommended that you change your filter no less then once per year. I usually change mine in April, before the need to have my AC running constantly while I am in the car. I think that it is a great thing to change out often if you have allergies since it does filter some of the outside air used by your vehicle.
Replacing the filters have become a fairly easy process. Now it only requires removing the glove box to have a full display of the area to work in and replace the filter. Almost all glove boxes now have quick release pins or maybe a couple of screws to release them to open up the space needed to replace the filter. It is a simple swap the filter and replace the glove box and it is done.
